13 July 2008 - CDSEE rocks EXIT What do you take with you if you are performing at one of Europe’s most happening, funky, energetic and diverse music festivals? A guitar…? Groupies and roadies…?….a list of the most ridiculous backstage demands you can think up? ….well, if you are the CDRSEE, you take sticky syrupy pastries! Reprising the creative and dramatic interpretation of history teaching in Southeast Europe that was so successful in the European Parliament in February, the CDRSEE offered an amusing and tasty look at the JHP to an audience and the media at the EXIT Festival on July 13th. Set in a field and castle near Novi Sad, the EXIT festival is a mixture of music, activism and coming together of cultures and creativity. It was at EXIT that bands, groups and musicians from across the Balkans first played together in Serbia, following the conflicts of the 1990’s, and the event has since grown into a 5 day celebration of music, NGO work and international festivities that draws acts and audiences from across the globe. The CDRSEE presented the JHP and Employed Empowered in an unusual way that included baklava, audience participation and plenty of humour, despite the serious content. With media coverage and footage to be used in the upcoming CDRSEE film, the event was a successful showcase of the CDRSEE’s work, approach and personality.
09 February 2008 - Press conference in Surcin, Belgrade Continuing its successes in highlighting and addressing issues of severe poverty and unemployment among people affected by displacement in Serbia, the latest phase of ‘Employed, Empowered’ involved a press conference in Surcin as well as an informal meeting between refugees, media personnel and representatives of the local public authorities. The event was the follow-on of months of research, practical application, cross disciplinary cooperation and advocacy, organised by the CDRSEE and partners, to work towards solutions and replicable models for empowering marginalised persons towards self-determined futures. With academic research, assistance in the field and the establishment of training programmes, ‘Employed, Empowered’ is an on-going initiative that has made substantial in-roads into allowing marginalised persons to change their living situation and access information, choices and possibilities. The press conference in Surcin comprised the Serbian Media and 30 representatives of the refugee community that has settled in the municipality of Surcin. Assistant Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Mr. Bojan Andjelkovic attended and spoke at the event, highlighting the Ministry’s support to this innovative initiative.

23-24 November 2007 - Roundtable 3 in Belgrade: “Tactics of penetrating the market niche and supportive training programmes” Continuing the process started by the first and second roundtables in September/October, the Employed, Empowered participants met again to discuss what kind of training would be most useful to empower disadvantaged groups and allow for access to sustainable income and a legal existence in society. Attended by 35 representatives of private economy, organizations offering adult learning and alternative forms of education, government institutions, NGOs and international bodies as well as representatives of the refugee community who initiated the process at the previous roundtables, the event rounded up the circle of expert discussions to formulate workable model solutions for the empowerment of the forced migrant population in Serbia. The working groups elaborated on a plan of action and a team was formed to consult on the actual development of training materials focusing on transferable skills and vocational knowledge vital for a wide range of professions. Psycho-social empowerment and a specific methodology taking into account the vulnerability of large groups within the target population was established as the basis for the training modules. There is a strong need to raise awareness for the concept of “life-long-learning” and the evolution of the knowledge based society, heading towards the aims formulated in the three pillars of the Lisbon Strategy. Especially disadvantaged groups are in danger of being further marginalised, if the Lisbonisation takes place and they are bypassed.
